We are passionate about education and helping owners have healthy relationships with their dogs! Often it is just lack of understanding or being completely overwhelmed by mixed information that causes owners to struggle with their dogs, which then means their dogs aren’t as balanced.
About Us
Our goal at Dogs By Design is to not only teach and train dogs, but also to educate and empower their owners! Dog training professionals can change dog behaviour quickly, but what really matters is teaching the owner and getting positive changes in their behaviour to bring out the best in their dog!
Our philosophy is to educate owners about their dog’s behaviour and teach them how to communicate in a way their dog can understand. The aim is to have calm and relaxed members of the family who look to their owners for guidance, protection and stability in the pack (that is ultimately the pack leaders role). I like to teach people how to live with and embrace their dog as a dog and to communicate and build a relationship with that in mind. We take this holistic approach and don’t just work on a specific issue because most behavioural issues are just a symptom of a root cause. We address the root cause, rather than putting a band-aid on the symptom.
Education
Education is incredibly important and so educating owners about their dogs is our top priority when it comes to helping them have a healthy relationship.
Many parents read piles of books learning the best ways to raise and care for their child. This is learning about how to care for something that is of the same species and has the same communication.
It’s important dog owners feel just as dedicated to providing themselves an education on their dogs needs and behaviours, especially because they are a different species. Would you bring a crocodile into your care without knowing the needs and communication of its species – just because dogs are everywhere and aren’t wild predators doesn’t mean they have the same communication as us.
Here at Dogs By Design we are passionate about education and have plenty of tools up our sleeve to inspire owners and make sure they understand what we are teaching them – education is so important and we certainly understand that every human & dog learn best in different ways.
Socialisation
Socialisation is learning how to behave appropriately and be comfortable in different environments; around people and other animals. A dog that has been exposed to a wide variety of situations and shown what state of mind to stay in will be able to go more places with their family.
Don’t under estimate the power of socialisation – there is a reason service dogs are placed into homes when young to be socialised. Socialisation is about preparing your dog to cope with change, distraction and the unknown while learning that it isn’t something to react to or fear .
When done properly it builds a dog’s confidence so that when human error inevitably occurs your dog is better equipped to make better choices and be confident.
Remember a human world is very different to what their instincts know. I’m sure if you only walked the same route and lived in the same house for your entire childhood, you would struggle to cope with the changing outside world too.
Leadership
Your dog is a social animal. All social/communal animals have some form of social structure: elephants, chickens, great apes, hyenas, rats. In more complex structures there are leaders. Their role is to keep the group safe and ensure their survival.
The word leadership or pack leader can instill a little uncertainty, but it shouldn’t. We are definitely not talking about the leadership of the manager that everyone tip-toes around, the one that is constantly micro-managing or the one who is trying to prove they are “the boss”! We are talking about that person people naturally gravitate towards and respect, not because they scare you into it but because they have a quiet confidence, but are also devoted to meeting the needs of their team.
Your dog needs you to be a good leader – your responsibility is to provide stability, direction and protection to your dog, in a way that makes them trust and want to follow you. Many of their natural behaviours are not appropriate when living in a human world and they need you to show them what is and isn’t acceptable. Lead by example, calmly and confidently.
Our methodology
The dog training industry likes labels, so we are what would be classified as a balanced trainer. This means we use both rewards, guidance and discipline in our training. We believe it is far clearer and kinder to tell our dogs when they have done the right thing AND the wrong thing. By giving them all the information, they can make better decisions around how to behave.
We work with the owner and dog in front of us. Often, the majority of changes need to be made by the owner so their dog can feel like they are part of a safe and stable pack. While we do teach training techniques, our focus is on creating a healthier relationship between you and your dog. We will work on your energy, body language and state of mind, which in turn impacts your dog’s behaviour. As well as this, we will teach you how to fulfil your dogs needs with proper exercise, structure, rules, boundaries and limitations.
Because our ultimate goal is to help owners and dogs have a fulfilling life together, our ultimate goal is to create a calm, confident and empowered owner. Because no two people are the same we use a wide variety of training techniques & tools to be able to help owners get to that point!
If you would like to get a better feel for what we do, tune into our Facebook live Q&A sessions every Monday at 7.00pm. We are more than happy to answer any questions about our training philosophies. You will find it will give you a better idea for who we are too!
Meet the Team
Laura Hartley
I entered the dog training industry when I was 18years old- a childhood determination. I was obsessed with dogs, well, all animals to be honest! I spent most of my time “being” an animal and who knows, maybe “being” all those animals helped develop my skills into what they are today!
David Attenborough was also a major influence on me. I religiously watched and learnt from his numerous amazing animal documentaries my entire life. I’m sure this also contributed to my ideas about working with dogs today. While I learnt that different species have different needs and communication, their basic purpose and learning principles are the same – yes even humans.
I’m great with dogs, but where I really excel is educating owners and passing on my knowledge in a way they can understand and relate too. I have put a lot of effort into bettering my people skills because I know that if I can’t communicate and help the owner understand and change their behaviour, there will be no change for their dog. As part of that, I listen to audio books and watch educational talks about peoples emotions and how they impact their lives and the lives of others. From all this I know how best to communicate with different personalities and emotional states.
I have 13+ years experience in the Dog Industry. A large chunk of it has been in the service dog industry raising puppies and training dogs to be service dogs. I have learnt and implemented a wide range of training techniques, though my focus always comes back to understanding the psychology of the dog and helping them be a fulfilled and balanced animal.
I live with my husband on a small lifestyle block where I run Dogs By Design. We live there with our 11 dogs (most of whom have been rescued) and 2 cats. In my spare time you will find me walking the dogs in various places, playing board games and PlayStation or computer games. I am also a very keen Dungeons & Dragons player!
